Voices of the 8th: Time for a Change

After hundreds of phone calls, letters, emails, and office visits informing his staff of our concerns regarding the Republican reconciliation bill, Representative Evans still voted to harm District 8 working families by voting for it. And he’s proud he did, at least in the press release he issued.

In real life, Mr. Evans continues to hide from his constituents, who were aware of the bill’s detrimental impact on CO-8 and wanted to discuss it with him. A call was made to Evans’ Northglenn office to schedule visits on July 11th for several constituents, and arrangements were made. But less than an hour later, Evans’ staff called back and said they were taking a ‘work from home day’ instead, and the office would be closed.

This is the last straw. It’s clear that Representative Evans’ ideas about what is best for CO-8 aren’t in alignment with the majority of his constituents, but rather are more focused on tax cuts for the wealthy and catering to special interests. We have to replace him. 

Our first town hall was designed to bring constituents and Representative Evans together, allowing us to hear his perspective on the bill and present our concerns. Mr. Evans declined to respond to our invitations and failed to appear. Lesson learned.

Our next town hall (August 23rd, Thornton Community Center, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.) will be to discuss what the community wants to see in their next representative, and Mr. Evans will not be invited. We will have speakers who will help break down the contents of the reconciliation bill and explain how and when the impacts will take effect. We will then have an open discussion about the qualities and positions we are looking for in Mr. Evans’ replacement.

Impacts on Medicaid

The State of Colorado issued a flyer in June regarding how the changes to Medicare in the House version of the bill would affect District 8. After the bill went through the Senate, it got worse, but you can see the low-end estimate of the impacts here. It is scary stuff, and it’s just one of the things that got worse for working families when the bill passed.
