Voices of the 8th: Fight Local!

Let’s be real: Sometimes the problems in the world seem insurmountable. Too big to tackle. It can be hard to feel like our efforts are making a difference on such a large scale.

Continuing to be engaged and active in national and international politics is important, and when we band together, change is possible. However, this week we wanted to focus on how to make a difference at the local level, where things feel more tangible.

In District 8, our local politics matter. Gabe Evans’ hold on his position is notoriously weak, so booting him in the midterms will be vital to crushing the republican majority.

But let’s look even more local.

We want to shine the spotlight on a local issue championed by some friends of ours: The Boujie Recreation Center, championed by Backyard Oligarch Martin Lind, but paid for by Greeley residents who can’t afford the overpriced tickets.

This billionaire pet project serves to make our local billionaire richer, while potentially bankrupting the city of Greeley.

Make sure you check out this amazing write-up of the situation and what locals are doing to stop it!

You might be familiar with this issue (we’ve certainly talked about it before), but there is something you can do right now.

Grassroots activist groups are working to collect enough signatures to get this issue on the ballot, putting the power back in the people’s hands

They need to collect 6,000 signatures. Even if you don’t live in Greeley, you can still be a petition circulator.

Awareness is key here. We all need to work together to collect signatures and get this issue on the ballot.
