The Importance of Education:

With all the changes coming out of Washington, it can be hard to keep up with what is happening and how it impacts each of us. We know the value of understanding the harm done by these bills; therefore, we put together a town hall to better help educate our fellow constituents so that they can make informed decisions about not only how to try and mitigate the damage but what changes we want to advocate for once we understand the full impact.

Education matters, not only for ourselves but so we can be better equipped to discuss current events with our friends and families who might be confused or misguided.

Our town hall will feature a panel of experts from various organizations who will speak on topics such as Medicaid cuts, overall government funding cuts, and the intentional skewing of terminology to mislead the public.

When we arm ourselves with understanding, we can take accountability for our own awareness and also spread fact-based messaging during a time of intentional confusion.

The Colorado Democratic Party is also holding a town hall entitled “Big Bill Fallout Emergency Town Hall,” where the elected state legislators from Adams County will discuss the upcoming special session called to help fix the funding shortfalls caused by the ‘Big Bill’ and what it means for Colorado. It will be on Monday evening, August 18th, and you can find out more details and register here.

Homeland Security Looking to Open New Jail

The Denver Post reported on Monday that ICE plans on opening another detention center in Hudson, Colorado, to go along with its existing facility in Aurora. This information was provided to US Representatives who were touring the Aurora jail and correlates with information obtained by the ACLU and Fox 31 earlier in the year. Likely a part of new funding for immigration jails from the latest reconciliation bill, the new facility would nearly double the capacity of available beds for ICE use. Re-opening the mothballed facility (it was last used in 2014) and staffing it will take a lot of money and time, and there is no clear need for it, as the Aurora facility isn’t at capacity. The only entities set to benefit from this are the jail owners and the contractors they pay to run it. Please keep an eye on this issue and be ready to mobilize to try and prevent it from coming online.
